Three hours outside of Nairobi, at the foothills of Mount Kenya in Nanyuki, lies a pristine, 1950’s- style, luxurious hotel, Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club. The hotel, once owned by Hollywood star William Holden, riffs of old Hollywood grandeur. From the hundreds of acres of lush grounds to the out-of-this-world views, this hotel has continued to keep it’s spot as Nanyuki’s top gem. When it comes to location, you can’t beat this one, being on the slopes of Kenya’s tallest mountain makes for the best vantage point of view. The hotel also lies on the equator, yes, people, you could literally straddle the equator.
When we arrived, we were welcomed with tropical drinks and a list of activities we could enjoy while staying there. The activities, included horseback safaris, table tennis, croquet, golf, or for the adventurous, getting lost in the life-sized maze. My agenda was getting in some r&r, so sitting on the veranda with the roaming peacocks, while taking in the view of the mountain peak was all the activity I wanted. My time there felt like a scene out of a fairytale. Sitting at the hotel restaurant patio at night watching the full moon orbit the earth while enjoying a delectable dinner was surreal. Oh, and speaking of dinner, the food could only be the work of a master chef, so good, I must have gained 10 lbs in 2 days.
